Blackbutt (Eucalyptus patens) is a tall, straight, hardwood tree. Endemic to W.A., it is a particularly beautiful timber, which makes excellent furniture especially with the fine gum veins and occasional marks of insect life cycles. The fine grain allows for good finishing and crisp clean edges to furniture designs. The common name is derived from the bark, which is often blackened by fire. Rarer forms of blackbutt feature 'curl' or 'fiddleback' and are exceptionally valuable.
